About the Role

We are recruiting for a Calibration & Instrumentation Engineer to join our experienced Engineering and Facilities Team at our Hoddesdon site.

In this role, you will carry out planned and reactive calibration, instrumentation maintenance and fault-finding activities across a range of site equipment and systems.

You will ensure that calibration and maintenance activities are completed safely, accurately and on time, in accordance with GxP requirements, approved procedures and recognised standards. Your work will enable the Engineering and Facilities Department to provide an efficient and effective service to the wider business.

Key Responsibilities

• Carry out planned and reactive calibration, maintenance and fault-finding activities across site instrumentation and control systems.
• Calibrate temperature, humidity, pressure, flow and speed instrumentation supporting BMS-monitored HVAC, reactor systems, stability chambers, cold rooms, utilities and room-pressure cascades.
• Complete calibration and preventative maintenance schedules on time using the Computerised Maintenance Management System.
• Respond to instrumentation failures and emergency breakdowns, minimising disruption to site operations.
• Produce accurate, traceable and GxP-compliant calibration certificates, maintenance records and technical reports.
• Identify, document and escalate out-of-tolerance results, supporting impact assessments and investigations where required.
• Proactively identify improvements or omissions within calibration and maintenance plans, working with the Engineering Workshop Supervisor to ensure all plans remain relevant, technically accurate and compliant.
• Maintain calibration equipment and reference standards, ensuring associated certification remains current and traceable.
• Support small projects where required, including the design, installation, commissioning and qualification of new or modified instrumentation and control systems.
• Continually look for innovative and cost-effective ways of completing work without compromising safety, quality or compliance.
• Ensure sufficient stocks of calibration equipment, materials, components and replacement parts are maintained.
• Ensure all work is carried out to the highest safety standards, proactively identifying and reporting potential hazards or risks.
• Liaise with colleagues who may be affected by planned work, minimising disruption and keeping them informed of progress and expected completion times.

Candidate Profile

• Formal engineering apprenticeship, technical qualification or equivalent experience in instrumentation, calibration or control engineering.
• Post-apprenticeship experience within an instrumentation, calibration or controls position.
• City & Guilds-accredited qualification, or an equivalent recognised qualification, in a core engineering discipline.
• Practical experience calibrating temperature, humidity, pressure, flow or speed instrumentation.
• Broad knowledge of engineered systems, calibration practices and maintenance activities.
• Understanding of GxP principles and experience producing compliant calibration and maintenance documentation.
• Experience working with temperature, humidity and pressure instrument loops supporting BMS-monitored HVAC systems, reactor systems, stability chambers, cold rooms and room-pressure cascades.
• Experience investigating instrumentation faults and out-of-tolerance calibration results.
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent documentation and record-keeping skills, with the ability to produce clear and concise reports.
• Good interpersonal skills and a customer-focused approach.
• A strong commitment to safety, quality and compliance.
• Helpful, responsive and committed to delivering a high-quality service.
• A proactive self-starter who works effectively as part of a team.

Experience with purified water systems, agitator speed sensors, MCERTS flowmeters and VOC gas analysers would be beneficial.

Desirable Requirements

• Experience working with GMP manufacturing equipment.
• A recognised qualification in a secondary controls discipline, or equivalent practical experience in control systems.
• Knowledge of high-integrity process control systems and PLC programming.
• Experience supporting the installation, commissioning or qualification of new instrumentation.
• Experience managing calibration equipment, reference standards and associated certification.
