About the Role
We are seeking a Technical Specialist – Bioanalysis & Biotransformation to join our Metabolism team in Rushden. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced scientist with strong expertise in high-resolution mass spectrometry, metabolite identification, structure elucidation, and LC-MS/MS data interpretation to play a key role in supporting global regulatory and non-regulatory studies.
Working as a technical specialist within the department, you will be responsible for conducting analytical and metabolite identification work across a range of study types, including in vitro, in vivo, clinical, large molecule/biological, and environmental fate studies. You will also contribute to method development, scientific reporting, client discussions, training, and continuous improvement initiatives within your specialist area.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as a technical expert in metabolite identification and structure elucidation using high-resolution mass spectrometry.
- Conduct analytical and metabolite identification work for regulatory and non-regulatory studies in line with study plans, analytical work plans, and project timelines.
- Support studies across in vitro, in vivo, clinical, large molecule/biological, and environmental fate programmes.
- Develop and optimise LC-MS/MS chromatographic methods within the group and across the wider Metabolism Department.
- Interpret analytical data and prepare accurate scientific updates, study documentation, and report contributions.
- Work closely with Study Directors and Analytical Project Managers to ensure successful delivery of client projects.
- Contribute scientifically to client communications and discussions, where appropriate.
- Develop training materials and deliver training in your area of specialism.
- Mentor and support colleagues by sharing technical knowledge and best practice.
- Lead process improvement and new service development projects within your specialist area.
- Maintain responsibility for assigned equipment, software, and laboratory areas.
- Address relevant findings arising from QA audits and process inspections.
- Maintain and write SOPs as required.
- Help raise the external profile of the department through publications, posters, presentations, and participation in expert groups.
- Ensure all work is performed in accordance with Health & Safety requirements, GxP standards, study plans, SOPs, and company procedures.
Candidate Profile
- PhD, MSc or BSc (Hons) in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a related scientific discipline.
- Experience in metabolite identification within a CRO, pharmaceutical, or agrochemical environment would be highly desirable.
- Strong experience in chromatographic method development.
- Experience working within a GLP or regulated laboratory environment would be beneficial.
- Proficient in the use of high-resolution mass spectrometry platforms, such as Waters Vion or Thermo Q Exactive.
- Experience using relevant software packages such as Xcalibur, Waters UNIFI, and Compound Discoverer.
- Good knowledge of metabolism and metabolic reactions.
- Strong LC-MS/MS data interpretation and structure elucidation skills.
- Excellent scientific data interpretation, reporting, and presentation skills.
- Confident written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present scientific findings to colleagues and clients.
- Strong organisational, problem-solving, prioritisation, and scheduling skills.
- Experience coaching, mentoring, or supporting the development of colleagues.
- Good project management skills.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office applications.
- Conscientious and meticulous approach to laboratory and written work.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work to tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Flexible, proactive, and willing to support changing study requirements, including occasional early starts, longer days, or weekend work where required.
